Windows 11 Windows App Won’t Open? How to Fix It

Windows Security app

The Windows Security app (formerly Windows Defender) is your PC’s built-in guardian — monitoring threats, viruses, firewalls, and more. But what happens when it fails to open or won’t start at all? Don’t worry. We’ve got you covered with all possible fixes, from quick tweaks to a full reset.

🔍 Why Windows Security Might Fail to Open

Some common causes include:

  • Corrupted system files
  • Disabled background services

  • Conflicting antivirus software

  • Pending updates

  • Malware interference

Let’s fix it!

1. Basic Restart

Start simple. Restart your PC to refresh the system and resolve minor bugs.

🔄 2. Check for Windows Updates

Outdated system components can cause app failures.

Steps:

  • Go to SettingsWindows Update

  • Click Check for updates

  • Install any pending updates and reboot

🛑 3. Disable/Uninstall Third-party Antivirus

Other antivirus software can conflict with Windows Security.

Steps:

  • Go to SettingsAppsInstalled apps

  • Find your antivirus, uninstall it

  • Restart and try opening Windows Security again

🔧 4. Use PowerShell to Reinstall Windows Security App

Sometimes, the app itself is corrupted.

Steps:

  1. Right-click Start → choose Windows Terminal (Admin)

  2. Paste this command:

    powershell
    Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.SecHealthUI -AllUsers | Reset-AppxPackage
  3. Press Enter, wait for it to finish, then try opening the app again.

🛠️ 5. Check Essential Services

Make sure related services are running.

Steps:

  1. Press Win + R → type services.msc → hit Enter

  2. Look for:

    • Windows Security Service

    • Security Center

    • Microsoft Defender Antivirus Service

  3. Double-click each → Set Startup Type to Automatic → Click Start if not running

⚙️ 6. Scan for System Corruption

Use SFC and DISM tools to fix broken Windows files.

Steps:

  1. Open Command Prompt (Admin) or Terminal (Admin)

  2. Run:

    bash

    sfc /scannow
  3. After that, run:

    swift
    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  4. Restart your PC

🧹 7. Run Windows Troubleshooter

Windows has built-in troubleshooters for security and system maintenance.

Steps:

  • Go to SettingsSystemTroubleshootOther troubleshooters

  • Run Windows Security and System Maintenance

🔁 8. Create a New User Profile

If your profile is corrupt, create a new one to test.

Steps:

  • SettingsAccountsFamily & other users

  • Add a new local user (not a Microsoft account)

  • Log in to the new user account and check Windows Security

🧼 9. Perform a System Restore

Roll your PC back to when Security was working.

Steps:

  • Search for Create a Restore Point

  • Click System Restore → Choose a restore point → Follow the prompts

🔄 10. Reset the PC (Last Resort)

If nothing else works, reset your PC. Choose to keep your files.

Steps:

  • SettingsSystemRecovery

  • Under Reset this PC, click Reset PC

  • Choose Keep my files

  • Follow on-screen instructions
