Tyla Sweeps the SAMAs – Africa’s Grammy Queen Shines at Home

Tyla Sweeps the SAMAs

Okay, let’s be honest — Tyla did not come to the 2026 South African Music Awards to just collect her flowers and go home. She came to serve.

On Saturday, August 15, 2026, the 24-year-old two-time Grammy winner made her long-awaited debut at the 32nd South African Music Awards (SAMA32) , held at the Sun City Superbowl in Rustenburg, North West. And she didn’t just show up — she absolutely owned the night.

A Historic Second Win

Tyla walked away with the AfriPure International Achievement Award. But here’s what makes it special: this marks the second time she has received this honour, making her only the second artist after global DJ and producer Black Coffee to win it twice. She previously won at SAMA30 in 2024, but this was the first time she actually received the award in person.

Presented by media icon Bonang Matheba and AfriPure co-founder Grant Hughes, the award recognised Tyla’s global breakthrough and her role in putting South African pop, amapiano, and Bacardi genres on international charts.

An Emotional Homecoming

Taking the stage for the first time at the SAMAs, Tyla delivered what many are calling one of the most memorable acceptance speeches in recent memory.

“Hello, South Africa! Thank you, guys, so much. I can’t even explain the feeling I have right now standing on the stage,” she began.

She spoke about dreaming of this moment as a little girl:

“This is my first time at the Samas, and I just remember being a little girl dreaming of this day. Obviously, I had the dream of travelling the world and becoming a pop star, but a big dream of mine was to come to the Samas, and now I’m here, so it’s another thing I’m ticking off.”

Then came the words that resonated with millions:

“There’s never been a ‘Tyla’ before me, and I don’t have a roadmap. I don’t have someone to call and ask how they did things and which steps to make.”

She thanked South Africa for supporting her journey, adding with profound pride:

“South Africa runs through my veins. It shows in the way I speak and the way I dance.”

Sharing the Spotlight

But perhaps the most powerful moment of the night came when Tyla refused to keep the spotlight to herself. Mid-speech, she turned to the audience and began calling out names:

“I want to take this moment to celebrate all the artists from here. I want to, if I can, call Cassper, Makhadzi, and Babalwa. I want to call up Zee. I want to call up all the African artists. If you guys can come up on stage, MaWhoo. I want you guys to share the stage with me right now. Make some noise!”

Artists including Makhadzi, Zee Nxumalo, Langa Mavuso, Babalwa M, Lordkez, Maglera Doe Boy, and Cassper Nyovest rushed to join her in a joyful, crowded celebration.

“Our music and our culture are so rich, and I’m so proud of everybody. I thank you guys so much that I get to stand on your shoulders, and I get to be inspired by you guys every day.”

She ended with a vision that went beyond music:

“I pray, I pray, one day to see a unified Africa. It’s so important.”

Social media erupted. Fans praised her generosity of spirit, with one commenting: “Tyla won, but she saw it as ‘we won’.” Another simply declared: “She’s the landlord.”

Fashion That Demanded Attention

And then there was the look. Tyla understood the assignment. The red carpet at SAMA32 was all about dramatic capes, statement canes, and bold tailoring — and Tyla fit right in. According to fashion observers, she “easily became one of the names people couldn’t stop looking at”.

The night’s fashion had personality — African stars confidently making style their own, experimenting and pushing boundaries. And Tyla was right at the centre of it all.

A Year of Global Domination

The SAMA32 win adds to what has been an extraordinary year for the Johannesburg-born star. In February 2026, she won her second Grammy Award for Best African Music Performance for her hit single Push 2 Start, following her previous victory with Water.

She also made history at the 2026 American Music Awards, winning Best Afrobeats Artist for the second consecutive year and Social Song of the Year for CHANEL.

And there’s more to come — Tyla recently announced her A*Pop World Tour, which will include performances in Cape Town and Johannesburg.

The Night’s Other Big Winners

Tyla wasn’t the only star celebrated at SAMA32. Legendary producer, DJ, and music entrepreneur Oskido received the Lifetime Achievement Award for over 30 years of shaping South African music, dedicating the honour to the late Lebo Mathosa.

Gospel singer HLE took home both Female Artist of the Year and Album of the Year for The Ground We’re OnMzukulu won Male Artist of the Year and Best Maskandi AlbumMakhadzi Entertainment won Best Traditional Music Album, and Kabza De Small took Best Amapiano Album.

Tyla’s SAMA32

homecoming was everything fans could have hoped for — and more. She won a historic award, delivered an emotional speech, brought her fellow artists onto the stage with her, and reminded the world why she’s one of Africa’s biggest global stars.

“I’m so happy to be South African. I’m happy to be African most of all.”

Mission accomplished, Tyla. Mzansi is proud.
