After a World Cup summer and a transfer window that saw over a billion pounds change hands, the 2026-27 season kicked off with a bang — and by the end of the opening weekend, we’d already had statement wins, crushing defeats, and enough drama to fuel a dozen title races.
Here’s your comprehensive recap of a week that reminded us exactly why we love this league.
🏆 Friday Night: The Champions Set the Tone
Arsenal 3-0 Coventry City
The defending champions didn’t just win — they made a statement. Mikel Arteta’s side brushed aside Frank Lampard’s newly-promoted Coventry with ruthless efficiency, with goals from Kai Havertz (15′), Bukayo Saka (23′), and captain Martin Ødegaard (49′) sealing a comfortable victory.
The stats were damning. Coventry became the first team since Opta began tracking the data in 2007 to have zero touches in the opposition box and zero tackles in the first half of a Premier League game. They eventually made their first tackle in the 69th minute — when they were already 3-0 down.

Newly-promoted Hull City, tipped by almost everyone to finish dead last, produced one of the great opening-day upsets by dismantling Michael Carrick’s Manchester United. Central defenders Semi Ajayi (17′) and Nobel Mendy (38′) scored the goals, both from set-pieces, as United’s defence crumbled.
This was Hull’s first ever Premier League victory over Manchester United (P11 W1 D2 L8) and their first league win against the Red Devils since November 1974.
Hull boss Sergej Jakirovic, the first Bosnian to manage in the Premier League, had been written off by pundits. Joe Cole had said he’d be “stunned” if Hull stayed up. After the match, Jakirovic’s response was ice cold: “This is football. We are professionals. We are trying to prove people wrong.”
For United, it was a nightmare. They’ve now lost four of their last seven Premier League opening-day fixtures and failed to score in their last two season openers despite 43 combined shots. They had 72% possession and 21 shots — but zero goals. Michael Carrick, who finished last season strongly, is already under pressure.

Everton 2-0 Crystal Palace
David Moyes’ Everton made it two wins from two at the start of the season (if you count the Community Shield) with a professional 2-0 victory over Pierre Sage’s Crystal Palace. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall (42′) and Thierno Barry (53′) scored the goals.
The performance was built on a youthful midfield partnership — 19-year-old Harrison Armstrong and new signing Hayden Hackney both impressed. Palace, meanwhile, had an expected goals tally of 2.04 — their highest in a Premier League game without scoring since 2018. Jean-Philippe Mateta and Eddie Nketiah both missed golden chances.
Ipswich Town 2-1 Sunderland
Ipswich made an immediate return to winning ways after their relegation last season, triumphing 2-1 at Portman Road. Emersonn (24′) opened the scoring, Nilson Angulo (39′) levelled for Sunderland, but Jack Clarke popped up with a 90th-minute winner from the middle of the penalty area.
Nottingham Forest 0-1 Leeds United
Oliver Glasner’s debut as Forest manager ended in defeat. Anton Stach curled home an 88th-minute free-kick to snatch all three points for Leeds.
🐝 5:30 PM Saturday: Spurs’ £237m Reality Check
Brentford 3-0 Tottenham Hotspur
And then came the cherry on top of a ridiculous Saturday.
Tottenham had spent £237m on six new signings this summer. They gave competitive debuts to five of them. And they were absolutely outplayed by Brentford.
Keane Lewis-Potter (12′), Vitaly Janelt (33′), and Michael Kayode (49′) scored the goals. Igor Thiago even missed a penalty for Brentford in the 55th minute. It could have been worse.
Brentford’s club-record signing Mamadou Sangare (£41.1m from Lens) was the star of the show, providing the assist for the first goal and running the midfield. The 24-year-old Malian walked away with the player of the match award.
“Spurs were flattered by the scoreline,” one reporter wrote. Sky Sports’ Jamie Redknapp praised Brentford’s “total football”. Tottenham failed to have a single shot on target in the first half.
