Gears of War: E-Day Is Finally Here

10 Things Every Gamer Needs to Know About Xbox’s Biggest Release

Seven years. That’s how long fans have waited for a new mainline Gears of War game. And now, after the longest gap in the franchise’s history, Emergence Day is finally upon us.

Gears of War: E-Day launched worldwide on October 6, 2026, and it’s already breaking records. The game set a franchise-high peak player count of over 20,000 on Steam within a day of its early access launch, nearly doubling Gears 5‘s all-time peak . It holds an 81% “Very Positive” rating on Steam — the highest-rated game from developer The Coalition on Valve’s platform .

Whether you’re a lifelong fan or a newcomer wondering what all the fuss is about, here are 10 things you need to know about Xbox’s biggest release of the year.

1. It’s a Prequel Set 14 Years Before the Original Game

Gears of War: E-Day takes place 14 years before the events of the first Gears of War game . It tells the story of Emergence Day — the catastrophic moment when the Locust Horde first erupted from beneath the planet Sera and laid waste to humanity .

For the first time in nearly 80 years, there is peace on Sera. The Pendulum Wars are over. Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago aren’t yet friends — they’re young veterans wondering what soldiers are supposed to do in a world without war .

2. It’s an Xbox Console Exclusive — No PS5 Version

Despite rumors that E-Day would follow Gears of War: Reloaded onto PlayStation, Microsoft confirmed in June 2026 that the game would remain an Xbox console exclusive . It’s available on Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, and Steam, with cloud gaming available through Game Pass Ultimate and GeForce NOW .

This marks a shift in Xbox’s recent multiplatform strategy, signaling that the company still sees value in keeping its biggest franchises exclusive.

3. The Story Focuses on Marcus and Dom Before They Were Brothers

The emotional core of E-Day is the origin of Marcus and Dom’s friendship. The game opens with a memorial service for Carlos Santiago — Dom’s older brother and Marcus’s best friend, who died shortly before the end of the Pendulum Wars .

What follows is the story of a brotherhood forming under impossible circumstances. “E-Day tells two origin stories,” The Coalition has said. “The first is the start of the Locust War. The second is a brotherhood coming together” .

4. The Campaign Spans Three Intense Nights in a New City

The entire campaign takes place over approximately three days in the city of Kalona, a new location built specifically for this game .

The first night is marked by confusion as the ground opens up and aggressive Locust creatures called Feral Wretches stream out. No one realizes that a war has begun . By the second day, Kalona’s City Hall becomes a makeshift COG base — half field hospital, half command center .

5. The Movement System Is the Biggest Gameplay Change

E-Day introduces the most significant changes to Gears’ movement in the franchise’s history. Players can now free jump, climb on top of objects they previously couldn’t reach, and slide across the battlefield .

These changes dramatically alter how combat encounters play out. The tried-and-true method of staying behind cover still works, but players can now give themselves a shot of adrenaline, charge straight at enemies, slide, and blow them apart with the Gnasher shotgun .

6. Classic Features Are Missing at Launch

Some beloved Gears features didn’t make the cut. Meat shields — the ability to grab enemies and use them as human shields — and chainsaw duels between players wielding Lancer rifles are both absent at launch .

The shotgun system has also been reworked. E-Day blends camera aiming and muzzle position to give players more control over those last-minute boomstick blasts .

7. It Supports 4-Player Co-op and Split-Screen

The campaign supports online co-op for up to four players and 2-player split-screen . For longtime fans, it’s a return to the series’ roots — the original Gears of War was built around co-op, and E-Day honors that legacy.

8. Multiplayer Includes Classic Modes and a New Horde Variant

Beyond the campaign, E-Day offers a full suite of multiplayer content. There’s Versus for competitive play, Horde Siege — an endlessly replayable mode that pits players against waves of enemies — and new modes including Demolition (a Search and Destroy-style mode) and Crucible .

The first multiplayer season will last approximately eight weeks and include thematic events like Halloween and “Thanksgibbing”. The game’s 20th anniversary will be celebrated across Seasons 1 and 2, with Season 2 — titled Legacy — featuring content longtime fans will recognize .

9. It Runs on Unreal Engine 5 and Looks Stunning

E-Day is built on Unreal Engine 5, and it shows. The game supports ray-traced shadows, reflections, and Lumen-powered global illumination . Reviewers have called it “a beautifully brutal Unreal Engine 5 showcase” .

The visuals and animations have taken “a clear leap forward” compared to Gears 5 .

10. Early Access Is Live — But You Need the Premium Edition

If you want to play right now, you need to purchase the Premium or Collector’s Edition of the game. Game Pass subscribers can get early access by paying for the Premium upgrade, which costs $30 .

The standard edition launches worldwide on October 6 at 15:00 UTC (8:00 AM PDT / 11:00 AM EDT / 4:00 PM BST) .

A Brutal, Brilliant Return to Form

Gears of War: E-Day isn’t just a prequel. It’s a homecoming. After seven years away, The Coalition has delivered a game that feels quintessentially Gears — brutal, bloody, and built around the kind of cover-based combat that defined a generation of shooters .

The movement changes make combat feel fresh. The story gives Marcus and Dom the origin they deserved. And the multiplayer suite offers more ways to play than ever before.

Reviews have been largely positive. One critic called it “a blood-soaked thrill ride” with “terrific shooting” . Another praised its “action-packed co-op campaign, intense PvP multiplayer, and an endlessly replayable Horde Siege mode” .

There are complaints — the campaign can feel sluggish at times, and some classic features are missing . But for longtime fans and newcomers alike, E-Day delivers what matters most: the feeling of being a Gear, fighting for survival on the day the world ended.

Emergence Day is here. Welcome back to Sera.
