Harry Kane Makes England History Again

Harry Kane Makes England History Again

The Incredible Record He Just Matched at Wembley

On the night he matched a record that stood for 36 years, Harry Kane did what Harry Kane does. He scored twice. He provided an assist. And he left Wembley with another piece of English football history in his pocket.

On October 6, 2026, Harry Kane won his 125th cap for England in a 3-0 Nations League victory over the Czech Republic at Wembley, equalling Peter Shilton’s all-time men’s appearance record that has stood since 1990. He marked the occasion with his 90th and 91st international goals — further extending his own record as England’s all-time leading goalscorer.

“The perfect night,” Kane called it afterwards.

The Night in Numbers

The 33-year-old captain delivered a complete performance on his milestone evening:

  • 27th minute: Provided the cross that Vladimír Coufal turned into his own net to open the scoring

  • 40th minute: Swept home a close-range finish after slick one-touch interplay between Elliot Anderson and Morgan Rogers — his 90th England goal

  • 57th minute: Headed in a corner from Lewis Hall for his 91st England goal

  • Full-time: 3-0 England, three consecutive Nations League wins under Thomas Tuchel, and a place in the Nations League knockouts all but secured

The numbers behind the numbers are staggering. Kane has now scored more international goals than Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer, and Trevor Francis combined. His 91 goals are 38 more than second-placed Wayne Rooney on England’s all-time list. And his first goal of the night was also his 50th for club and country in 2026 — by far the most of any player in Europe’s top five leagues, with Kylian Mbappé sitting second on 33.

“Beyond My Wildest Dreams”

Kane, who made his England debut 11 years ago, was visibly moved by the milestone.

“To join [Shilton] on 125 is an extreme privilege,” he said. “I love coming to every England camp, I love playing at every game representing the country in the best way possible. It’s not about me, it’s about the team, but to get a couple of goals and help the team to win, it’s been the perfect night”.

He described equalling Shilton’s record as “beyond my wildest dreams”. Shilton himself posted a congratulatory message on social media — a gracious gesture from the man whose record Kane will now break when England face Croatia at Wembley on November 12.

Jude Bellingham was less restrained. Asked about Kane’s place in history, the Real Madrid midfielder called his captain “England’s best-ever player”.

The Record That Took 125 Caps to Reach

Peter Shilton’s 125-cap record has been one of English football’s most enduring marks. The legendary goalkeeper accumulated his caps across nearly 20 years, earning his final one in 1990 at the age of 40. It was considered one of those records that might never be broken — a testament to longevity, durability, and a level of consistency that few players ever achieve.

Kane has matched it in 11 years.

The comparison is striking not just for the speed, but for the nature of the achievement. Shilton was a goalkeeper — a position where career longevity is common, and where a player can remain at the top level well into his late thirties. Kane is a striker — a position where pace and physicality matter, where injuries are more common, and where the window of elite performance is typically much shorter.

And yet, here he is. At 33, Kane is in the form of his life.

The Bigger Picture: Chasing Ronaldo

After the match, Kane was asked the question that follows every goalscoring record he breaks: can he catch Cristiano Ronaldo?

Ronaldo sits atop the all-time international goalscoring charts with 146 goals for Portugal. Kane, at 91, is 55 behind. It’s a massive gap. But Kane — who has scored 50 goals for club and country in 2026 alone — isn’t ruling it out.

“Let’s see how far we can get,” he said. “That’s an awfully long way away right now, but who knows, I’m in great shape. I’ve said before about some of the players who have played well into their late 30s and still at the highest level and, and even 40s now. It’s season by season and as long as I feel like I can help the team and be valuable, I’ll be around. We’ll have to see if we can get to 100 first, and then we’ll go from there”.

The 100-goal mark is the next milestone. At his current rate, he could reach it within the next two years.

Kane is now the fifth active player to reach 90 international goals, joining Ronaldo (146), Lionel Messi (125), Romelu Lukaku (94), and Robert Lewandowski (92). He’s in rarefied air — and he’s not done climbing.

What Comes Next

Kane will break Shilton’s appearance record when England face Croatia at Wembley on November 12. It will be another milestone, another moment of history, and another reminder that England’s captain — the man who was once loaned out to Leyton Orient and Millwall, who didn’t make his mark at the top level until he was 21 — has become the most decorated and most prolific player in the history of English football.

The records are piling up. The goals are piling up. And at 33, Harry Kane is still writing new chapters.

Not bad for a kid from Walthamstow who was told he was too slow.
