The Beatles still sit on the throne. But Drake just built an empire next door.
The Billboard Hot 100 is the definitive measure of success in American music. Since 1958, more than 32,000 songs have appeared on the chart, but fewer than 4% have reached No. 1. Only 13 artists have scored 10 or more chart-toppers — an elite club that separates the legends from the icons.
Here are the five artists who have defined the Hot 100 more than any others — by the numbers that matter most.
1. The Beatles — 20 No. 1 Hits
The Beatles have held the record for most No. 1 hits since 1965, when they surpassed Elvis Presley. Sixty-one years later, nobody has caught them.
Their 20 chart-toppers span from “I Want to Hold Your Hand” in 1964 to “The Long and Winding Road” in 1970 — a six-year run of dominance that reshaped popular music. They also hold the record for most top 10 hits among groups (35) and the longest span of top 10 hits excluding holiday songs (59 years, nine months, and three weeks).
No other act has come within one No. 1 of their total.
2. Mariah Carey — 19 No. 1 Hits
Mariah Carey sits just one chart-topper behind the Beatles, with 19 No. 1 hits. She is the only solo artist to have scored a No. 1 in each year of the 1990s, and her 19 chart-toppers include “Vision of Love,” “One Sweet Day,” “We Belong Together,” and “All I Want for Christmas Is You”.
Carey also ranks among the top artists for most top 10 hits (28) and remains one of only two acts — alongside the Beatles — to have more No. 1s than any other artist in history.
3. Taylor Swift — 15 No. 1 Hits
Taylor Swift has spent her career rewriting the record books. In June 2026, she reached No. 1 with “I Knew It, I Knew You” from the Toy Story 5 soundtrack, moving her to 15 chart-toppers and overtaking Rihanna and Drake for the most No. 1s among solo artists.
Swift also ranks second all-time for most top 10 hits (70) and second for most career Hot 100 entries (277). She is the only artist in history to debut at No. 1 with a song from an animated film soundtrack.
4. Rihanna — 14 No. 1 Hits
Rihanna’s 14 chart-toppers span a decade of dominance, from “Umbrella” in 2007 to “Lift Me Up” in 2022. She tied with Drake and Taylor Swift for the most No. 1 hits among all acts when Drake reached his 14th in May 2026.
Rihanna also ranks among the top 10 artists for most top 10 hits (32) and remains one of the best-selling music artists of all time.
5. Drake — 14 No. 1 Hits
Drake is the only artist on this list who is still actively rewriting his legacy. In May 2026, he broke Michael Jackson’s record for the most No. 1 hits by a solo male artist with “Janice STFU,” tying Rihanna and Taylor Swift at 14 chart-toppers.
But Drake’s real dominance is in volume. He leads all artists in total Hot 100 entries (402) — the only act in history to surpass 400 songs. He also leads all artists in total top 10 hits (76), nearly double Taylor Swift’s 49. And in May 2026, he broke the record for most entries in a single week, placing 42 songs on the chart.
No one has charted more music, more often, than Drake.

Honorable Mentions
Just outside the top five, several artists have built extraordinary Hot 100 legacies:
Michael Jackson scored 13 No. 1 hits and 30 top 10s, including the first song to debut at No. 1 (“You Are Not Alone”). Madonna has 12 No. 1s and 38 top 10s, the third-most top 10 hits of all time. Elton John has nine No. 1s and 29 top 10s, with a top 10 span of 51 years. Stevie Wonder has 10 No. 1s and 28 top 10s.
And in 2026, the Hot 100’s current No. 1 is Ella Langley, whose “Choosin’ Texas” spent 20 weeks at the top — a record-breaking run that has made her the year’s breakout star.
The Beatles still hold the crown.
Mariah Carey is one behind. Taylor Swift, Rihanna, and Drake are tied for third — and Drake is the only one of the five who is still actively releasing music at a record-breaking pace.
The Hot 100 has been running for 68 years. In all that time, only 13 artists have reached 10 No. 1 hits. Five of them have separated themselves from the rest.
The Beatles built the standard. Everyone else is still chasing it.
