Matthew Perry’s Untold Story: What the New Documentary Reveals About the Friends Star

Matthew Perry’s

A new Netflix documentary is finally telling the story of the man behind Chandler Bing—and it’s a story of almost unimaginable pain, staggering perseverance, and the people who loved him most. “The One About Matthew Perry” arrived on October 27, 2026, just one day before the third anniversary of his death, and it paints a portrait that is far more complex than the one the world saw on screen.

Directed by Mary Robertson, the three-part docuseries brings together his family, childhood friends, and colleagues to examine his life, his career, and his decades-long battle with addiction. But it also does something more difficult: it confronts the circumstances of his death and the people who, according to those closest to him, failed him when he needed them most.

Here is what the documentary reveals about the Matthew Perry the world never fully knew.

The Chandler Connection Was Never an Act

For anyone who ever wondered why Chandler Bing felt so real, the documentary offers an answer that is both touching and devastating. Perry saw himself in the character from the very first script. In archival footage, he describes Chandler as “a guy who was sort of trying to distract everybody from how miserable he was all the time by being funny”. His longtime friend, David Pressman, recalls Perry saying, “Somebody has written a script – this is me”.

The casting, according to former NBC Entertainment president Warren Littlefield, was the only one the producers struggled with. Then Perry walked into the room. “Less than 30 seconds” was all it took for everyone to know they had found Chandler. The performance that made him a star was, in a very real sense, an act of self-portraiture.

The $7 Million Fight for Sobriety

The most striking number in the documentary is seven million dollars. That is how much Perry spent trying to get sober, a figure his sister, Mia Perry Bowick, shares on camera. She is careful to frame it not as excess, but as a testament to how relentlessly he fought the disease that would eventually take his life.

The documentary traces the roots of that fight. It began with beer and cheap wine at 14. It escalated after a jet-ski accident during the filming of Fools Rush In in 1997, when a doctor gave him a painkiller that opened a door he could never fully close. By the end of the third season of Friends, he was taking around 55 Vicodin a day. He went to rehab 15 times. He attended 6,000 AA meetings. He slipped into a coma for two weeks in 2018 after his colon burst. He survived, but the addiction never left him.

A Family’s Perspective: “Matty,” Not Chandler

The documentary’s emotional core is Mia Perry Bowick, Matthew’s half-sister, who is 14 years younger and speaks publicly about her brother for the first time. To the world, he was Chandler Bing. To her, he was “Matty”.

Mia describes a childhood shaped by insecurity and a feeling of not being enough. In archival footage, Perry himself says: “The beliefs that I had were: I was too needy, I wasn’t enough, and I didn’t matter… my whole life was about trying to have those three things not be true”. The documentary connects that emptiness to his parents’ divorce and the difficulty of feeling secure while moving between two family environments.

Mia also speaks about the experience of watching the documentary itself. “I learned how to hold gratitude and grief simultaneously,” she says. “That was overall encompassing of how I felt watching the doc”.

The Betrayal

The most painful section of the documentary deals with the people around Perry in his final years. His live-in assistant, Kenny Iwamasa, obtained and administered the ketamine that contributed to his death. Iwamasa was sentenced to three years and five months in prison in May 2026.

Mia does not soften her language. “Kenny’s known my brother for the past 30 years. He knows what he’s battling,” she says. “The level of betrayal we all felt. He should have known better. He could have quit his job. He could have come and told one of the family members… I felt like I had been duped deeply”.

Family friend David Pressman goes further, describing a broader pattern of exploitation. “Matthew was a serious addict, and he just couldn’t shake it,” he says. “But with people like that in your orbit, who are taking advantage of your addiction and your wealth, I don’t think he stood much of a chance”.

The Friends Who Weren’t There

One of the documentary’s most discussed choices is the absence of Perry’s Friends co-stars. Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, and David Schwimmer all declined to participate. The documentary does not fill that gap with speculation or gossip. Instead, it gives space to the people who knew him before fame, outside of it, and after it—his sister, his childhood friends, and the producers who watched him become a star.

The result is a portrait that feels more intimate than a celebrity tribute. It is not the story of a sitcom actor. It is the story of a man who spent his whole life trying to feel like he mattered, and who fought like hell to stay alive.

“The One About Matthew Perry”

is not an easy watch. It is a documentary about addiction, grief, and the people who fail us when we are most vulnerable. But it is also a documentary about love—the love of a sister who learned to hold gratitude and grief at the same time, the love of friends who saw the real Matthew beneath the character, and the love of a man who, despite everything, never stopped trying to get better.

Three years after his death, the world is finally meeting the Matthew Perry who existed beyond the laugh track. It is a meeting that is long overdue.
