Arsenal vs Manchester City: How the Premier League’s Early Title Rivalry Is Taking Shape After Five Games

Bruno Guimarães

Five games, two teams, one point of separation that feels like a chasm. Manchester City have a perfect record. Arsenal have a single scar. And the most consequential title race in years is already writing its first chapter.

The 2026-27 Premier League season is barely a month old, and the shape of the title race is already unmistakable. After five matchdays, Manchester City sit top of the table with a 100% record. Arsenal, the defending champions, are three points behind. And the gap between them and the rest of the league is widening.

Here’s how the rivalry is taking shape.

City are the only side in the division with a perfect record. Arsenal are the only side within touching distance. The gap to third-placed Brighton is already five points, and the gap to Liverpool — tipped by many as the most credible outside challenger — is six.

Manchester City: The Perfect Start Nobody Predicted

When Pep Guardiola resigned at the end of last season after a decade of dominance, the consensus was that City would need time to adjust. New manager Enzo Maresca inherited a squad in transition, a club under investigation, and a fanbase bracing for a rebuild.

Five games later, City have won all five.

They opened with a 1-0 win at Old Trafford, then dismantled Sunderland 5-3 in one of the most chaotic matches of the young season. Erling Haaland has scored seven goals in six games across all competitions. The defence has been fallible — they conceded three against Sunderland — but the attack has been relentless.

Yet the underlying numbers suggest the perfect start is more fragile than it looks. City were outplayed on Expected Goals against Sunderland. The Black Cats created the better chances and left with nothing. As one analysis put it: “Win often enough like that, and the results eventually catch up with the performances”.

There’s also the small matter of the 114 financial charges City were found guilty of in late September. The verdict has thrown the season into uncertainty, though journalist Mark Ogden believes any punishment is “still two years away” and won’t affect this campaign.

Arsenal: A Stumble, Not a Collapse

Arsenal’s season began with four straight wins and just one goal conceded. Then they went to Brighton and lost 3-0.

It was their heaviest league defeat in over three years. Mikel Arteta described it as a failure to “respect any principle of play.” The performance was poor, the result was worse, and the manner of the defeat raised questions that had been quietly building for weeks.

But the underlying numbers tell a more reassuring story. Through four games, Arsenal had the best xG difference and the meanest defence in the division. They conceded the fewest good chances of anyone. Brighton away was a bad day, not a collapse.

The concern is creativity. Arsenal have created just seven big chances this season — half the number Brighton have managed, and nine fewer than Manchester City. In the big chances created table, the Gunners sit 15th. Not since 2021-22 has their creativity been so low.

The Underlying Numbers: Who’s Actually Better?

The table says City are three points clear. The statistics say the gap is narrower.

Arsenal’s underlying profile — xG difference, defensive solidity, chance prevention — remains the strongest in the league. They rely on control and clean sheets, and one aberration at Brighton doesn’t change that. Mikel Arteta’s team are still the ones most likely to secure the 30 or more victories required to win the title.

City, meanwhile, have been more clinical but less dominant. Their headline result against Sunderland was one they were outplayed in. They look a complete side, but they are not yet the machine Guardiola built.

The Opta supercomputer gives Arsenal a 43.7% chance of retaining the title, with City close behind. Together, the two clubs account for 83.4% of all title equity in the model’s predictions.

The Wildcard: City’s Financial Charges

The elephant in the room is the verdict. Manchester City were found guilty of 114 of 115 charges related to financial rule breaches in September 2026. The potential punishments range from a fine to points deduction to expulsion from the league. City have until October 2 to appeal.

If City are docked points, the title race changes instantly. If they are not — or if the punishment is delayed — Maresca’s side have every chance of winning their first title since 2024. As Ogden put it: “Of course they can”.

What Comes Next

The international break has given both managers time to reflect. Arsenal return with a point to prove and a creativity problem to solve. City return with a perfect record and a cloud hanging over their heads.

The next few weeks will be telling. Arsenal face a run of fixtures that will test their squad depth and their ability to create chances against compact defences. City face the challenge of maintaining their form while the noise around their financial case grows louder.

Five games is not a season. But it’s enough to know this: the Premier League’s title race is a two-horse race. City have the lead. Arsenal have the pedigree. And the rest of the league is already watching from a distance.

The gap is three points. It feels like it could be the whole season.
