Liverpool vs Manchester City: 5 Major Storylines That Could Decide Sunday’s Premier League Showdown

Liverpool vs Manchester City: 5 Major Storylines

Anfield. Sunday afternoon. First place vs. sixth. A perfect record vs. an unbeaten but drawing one. And a cloud of financial scandal hanging over the visitors like a storm front.

Liverpool host Manchester City on Sunday, October 11, 2026, in a fixture that has defined the Premier League for the past decade — but never quite like this. City arrive top of the table with a 100% record under new boss Enzo Maresca. Liverpool sit sixth, unbeaten but stuttering. And the backdrop is a verdict that has shaken English football to its core.

Here are the five major storylines that could decide the game.

1. The Guilty Verdict: Football’s Most Awkward Afternoon

Manchester City will walk out at Anfield for the first time since being found guilty of 114 of the 115 financial charges brought against them by the Premier League. The verdict, delivered just over two weeks ago, has cast a shadow over every trophy City have won in the past decade — and Anfield is unlikely to let them forget it.

“I suspect there may be banners, there will certainly be chanting,” one former player said. “There will be a reception like you have never seen for them at Anfield… it will be a brutal day”.

City manager Enzo Maresca has insisted the club’s titles are “absolutely not” tainted, and he’s confident his players can handle the hostility. But Jamie Carragher has warned that the atmosphere could cut both ways — City are “full of players used to hostile grounds, pressure and scrutiny”. Sam Allardyce went further, warning Liverpool fans that booing City “will only spur them on”.

The psychological battle off the pitch may be as decisive as anything that happens on it.

2. Liverpool’s Striker Crisis: Who Scores the Goals?

Liverpool are without their top scorer Alexander Isak (four league goals, second only to Erling Haaland) and Cody Gakpo, both injured on international duty. Hugo Ekitike remains sidelined with an Achilles injury. That leaves Lewis Koumas — a 21-year-old who has never started a Premier League game — as the only recognised centre-forward available.

Iraola’s solution may be to play Bradley Barcola through the middle. Barcola’s only previous appearance against City came in the Champions League in January 2025, when he scored and assisted in a 4-2 win for Paris Saint-Germain. The Reds will hope for a repeat.

“We need to be very, very good if we want to beat them,” Iraola said, acknowledging the challenge.

3. Haaland’s Anfield Record — and His New-Found Form

Erling Haaland has started the season in devastating form: five goals in five games, including winners against Coventry and Manchester United. He is the league’s top scorer and leads the expected goals charts (4.4) alongside Isak (3.5).

But Anfield has historically been his bogey ground. After scoring once in his first four Premier League games against Liverpool, Haaland finally netted at Anfield in February 2026 — a stoppage-time penalty that sealed a 2-1 comeback win and ended City’s Anfield hoodoo. He then scored in both league meetings last season.

There were question marks over his fitness after he came off for Norway during the international break, but Maresca confirmed on Friday: “He’s good. He went to Marbella, had two or three days off, played golf. Had some recovery. He’s ready for Anfield”.

4. Maresca’s Perfect Start vs. Iraola’s Unbeaten Beginning

Two new managers. Two unbeaten records. One will end on Sunday.

Enzo Maresca has won all five of his Premier League games since replacing Pep Guardiola, guiding City to the top of the table with 15 points from 15. A sixth consecutive win would cement City as genuine title contenders — and silence some of the noise surrounding the club.

Andoni Iraola has drawn three of his first five league games, but remains unbeaten. He could become only the third permanent Liverpool boss to avoid defeat in his first six top-flight matches, after Bob Paisley and Joe Fagan. A win against the league leaders would be a statement of intent.

This is also the first Premier League meeting between these clubs since March 2015 with neither Jürgen Klopp nor Pep Guardiola in the dugout. A new era, with new leaders, begins on Sunday.

5. The Tactical Battle: High Press vs. Press Resistance

The stats reveal a fascinating clash of styles.

Liverpool have applied high-intensity pressures to 48.9% of their opponent’s touches in the opposition half — the highest rate in the Premier League this season. Iraola’s football is built on aggression, intensity, and winning the ball back quickly.

City, meanwhile, complete 83% of their passes attempted while under high-intensity pressure — the best accuracy of any side. They are built to withstand exactly the kind of pressure Liverpool will apply.

It’s the irresistible force against the immovable object. Whichever system imposes itself on the other will likely determine the result.

This isn’t just a

football match. It’s a collision of narratives — a club fighting to defend its legacy against a club fighting to reclaim its place at the top. It’s a manager with a perfect record against a manager with nothing to lose. It’s Anfield at its most ferocious, and City at their most scrutinised.

“We will go for the game, they will go for it,” Iraola said. “It will be quite an open game and we have to be ready”.

Kick-off is at 4:30 PM BST on Sunday, October 11. Whatever happens, it won’t be quiet.
