Thirty-nine years to the day after the original premiered, the gates of Hillman College are swinging open again. And this time, the legacy isn’t just being honored — it’s being handed down.
On September 24, 2026, Netflix will debut its highly anticipated sequel series to A Different World, exactly 39 years after the original NBC sitcom first aired on September 24, 1987. The streamer isn’t just reviving a beloved show. It’s reintroducing an entire generation to the fictional HBCU that once inspired a 26% surge in real-world enrollment and shaped the way America talked about Black college life.

The Premise: A Legacy Kid Steps Out of the Shadow
The new series follows Deborah Wayne (Maleah Joi Moon), the free-spirited, “lovingly sheltered” youngest daughter of Hillman royalty: Whitley Gilbert and Dwayne Wayne. Deborah enters her freshman year at her parents’ alma mater trying to build her own legacy, not just inherit one. “She finds her parents’ shadow difficult to escape as she aims to build her own legacy,” the official synopsis notes.
She isn’t alone. The new class reflects what Netflix calls “the breadth of Black life on campus”:
Rashida Duvall (Alijah Kai): a first-gen criminal justice major
Shaquille Johnson (Cornell Young IV): a five-star athlete choosing legacy over the easy path
Amir Rodale (Jordan Aaron Hall): a sharp psychology major better at fixing everyone else’s problems than facing his own
Hazel Henry (Kennedi Reece): a church-raised small-town girl defining her own values
Kojo Achebe (Chibuikem Uche): a Ghanaian Nigerian fashion entrepreneur finding the courage to follow his vision
The Returning Legends: 10 Familiar Faces
This isn’t a cameo parade. Ten original cast members are returning, blending the old guard with the new.
Jasmine Guy (Whitley Gilbert-Wayne), Kadeem Hardison (Dwayne Wayne), Darryl M. Bell (Ron Johnson), and Cree Summer (Freddie Brooks) lead the alumni. They’re joined by Charnele Brown as Dr. Kimberly Reese Boyer, Jenifer Lewis as Professor Davenport, Dawnn Lewis as Jaleesa Vinson-Taylor, Glynn Turman as Colonel Bradford Taylor, Jada Pinkett Smith as Lena James, and — in a surprise Netflix kept quiet — Debbie Allen herself as Dr. Langhorne. Allen also directs the premiere episode.
The Creative Team: Built by Hillman Alumni and New Voices
The sequel is a genuine passing of the torch behind the camera as well. Felicia Pride (Queen Sugar, Bel-Air) serves as creator, showrunner, and executive producer. Debbie Allen — who produced and directed more than 80 episodes of the original — returns as executive producer and director.
The producing team also includes Tom Werner, Reggie Rock Bythewood, Gina Prince-Bythewood, and Mandy Summers. The directing roster spans five filmmakers across 10 episodes, including Tiffany Johnson, Angela Barnes, Nefertite Nguvu, and Bille Woodruff.
Brandy Norwood performs the new theme song, joining a lineage that includes Phoebe Snow, Aretha Franklin, and Boyz II Men.
Why This Matters: A Different World, Still Different
The original A Different World wasn’t just a sitcom. It was a cultural education. Over six seasons, it tackled HIV/AIDS, police brutality, and sexual assault while showcasing the rituals and traditions of HBCU life. Roughly 20 million viewers tuned in weekly at its peak.
The new series is described as “a hopeful dramedy, full of heart and unapologetically centered on the richness and complexity of the Black experience”. It’s set against the same HBCU backdrop, but for a generation navigating a different world entirely.
” If ever there was a time to hear from young Black America,” Debbie Allen told emmy magazine, “it’s right now”.
The new class knows the weight of that legacy. “They were united by heritage, purpose and, having grown up watching reruns, perhaps a bit of nostalgia, too,” Pride said of the six new leads. “They are very thoughtful artists — thoughtful about character, thoughtful about craft”.

All 10 half-hour episodes drop on September 24, 2026, exclusively on Netflix globally. The series is a single-camera comedy, a format shift from the original multi-camera sitcom.
The premiere date wasn’t arbitrary. Netflix chose it to honor the original’s legacy while reintroducing Hillman to a new generation.
A Different World
