But what if the problem isn’t your connection? What if someone else is stealing it?
Wi-Fi piggybacking is more common than you think. Whether it’s a tech-savvy neighbor, a former roommate who never changed their devices, or a hacker parked in your driveway, unauthorized users can leech off your connection, slow down your speeds, and even compromise your security.
The good news? You can catch them. And you can kick them off.
Here’s how to tell if someone is secretly using your Wi-Fi, and exactly what to do about it.
🚩 The Warning Signs
Before you dive into technical detective work, look for these red flags:
- Sudden Speed Drops: Your internet was fast yesterday, but today it’s crawling. If this happens at odd hours (like 2 AM), it’s suspicious.
- Unfamiliar Devices: You see a “Smart TV” on your network, but you don’t own one.
- Router Lights Going Crazy: The data activity lights on your router are flashing wildly even when all your devices are turned off.
- Being Kicked Off: You get disconnected from your own Wi-Fi randomly (which could mean someone else with the same MAC address is connecting).

🔍 Step 1: Check Your Connected Devices
The easiest way to catch a Wi-Fi thief is to look at the guest list. Every router has a web interface that shows every device currently connected to your network.
How to do it:
- Find your router’s IP address:
- Windows: Open Command Prompt, type
ipconfig, and look for “Default Gateway” (usually192.168.0.1or192.168.1.1). - Mac: Go to System Preferences > Network > Advanced > TCP/IP tab. Look for “Router.”
- Mobile: Check your Wi-Fi settings; the gateway IP is usually listed under network details.
- Windows: Open Command Prompt, type
- Log into your router: Type that IP address into your browser. You’ll need a username and password.

- Audit the list: You will see a list of device names (e.g., “John’s iPhone,” “Samsung TV”) and MAC addresses (a unique ID like
00:1B:44:11:3A:B7).- The Detective Work: Turn off all your Wi-Fi devices (phones, laptops, tablets, smart home gadgets). Refresh the list. If anything is still showing up, you have an intruder.
🛠️ Step 2: Use Network Scanning Apps
If logging into your router feels too technical, you can use free apps to scan your network for you. These tools show you exactly who is connected.
Top Tools:
- Fing (iOS/Android/Desktop): The gold standard for network scanning. It identifies devices by name and brand, making it easy to spot that “Unknown Device” that is actually your neighbor’s laptop.
- GlassWire (PC/Android): Great for visualizing network activity. It alerts you when a new device connects to your Wi-Fi.
- Who Is On My WiFi (Android): Simple, effective, and constantly monitors for intruders.
🕵️ Step 3: Check for “Mooching” Neighbors
Sometimes the thief isn’t a hacker; it’s just someone nearby with a weak signal who guessed your password (or is using a default one).
Signs of a neighbor leeching:
- Your signal is strong, but speeds are slow.
- You see devices with generic names like “Android-xyz” or “Desktop-PC” that you don’t recognize.
- The unauthorized device only appears at night or on weekends.
🛑 How to Kick Them Off (And Keep Them Out)
Found an intruder? Don’t panic. Here is your action plan to reclaim your bandwidth.
1. Change Your Wi-Fi Password Immediately
This is the nuclear option, but it works. Changing your password instantly disconnects every device. You will have to reconnect your own devices, but the intruder will be locked out for good.
- Tip: Use a strong password (at least 12 characters, mix of letters, numbers, and symbols). Avoid using your address or phone number.
2. Enable MAC Address Filtering
Every device has a unique fingerprint called a MAC address. You can tell your router to only allow specific MAC addresses to connect.
- How: In your router settings, find “MAC Filtering” or “Access Control.” Add your devices’ MAC addresses to the “Allow List.”
- Result: Even if a hacker has your password, their device physically cannot connect because its MAC address isn’t on the list.
3. Update Your Router’s Firmware
Hackers often exploit security holes in old router software. Log into your router and check for a “Firmware Update” button. Keeping this up to date patches security vulnerabilities.
4. Disable WPS
Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) is that little button on your router that lets you connect devices easily. It’s convenient, but it’s also a massive security hole. Hackers can brute-force WPS pins easily. Turn it off in your router settings.
5. Check Your Encryption
Ensure your network is using WPA2-AES or WPA3 encryption. If your router is still using WEP or WPA/TKIP, it’s time to upgrade your router. Those old standards can be cracked in minutes.

Before you declare war on your neighbors, make sure that “unknown device” isn’t actually yours. Smart home tech is sneaky.
Common devices people forget about:
- Smart TVs or streaming sticks (Roku, Fire TV, Chromecast)
- Smart speakers (Alexa, Google Home)
- Smart thermostats or doorbells

Pro Tip: If you see a device named something like “Hon Hai” or “Foxconn,” don’t panic. Those are manufacturers. Google the MAC address prefix (the first 6 characters) to see who made the chip. It might just be your smart lightbulb.
