Music Stars Who Don’t Write Their Songs

Selena Gomez

We love to celebrate singer-songwriters, but the history of pop music was actually built the other way: one person writes, another person sings it better than anyone else could.

During Elvis’s time, it was completely normal for performers to sing songs written by full-time songwriters. The music industry was built that way — especially in the early rock, pop, and country scenes. Artists were often selected based on their voice, charisma, and commercial appeal — not their ability to write music. Many of the biggest stars from the era — including Frank Sinatra and Patsy Cline — didn’t write their own material either.

That system never went away. It just got better songwriters.

Here are the biggest stars who built legendary careers singing other people’s words — and why it works.

1. Elvis Presley — The King Who Didn’t Write

Elvis: Believe it or not, The King had almost nothing to do with the writing of his own songs.

Did Elvis write any of his songs? Barely. He has a co-writer credit on a few early tracks because his manager, Colonel Tom Parker, demanded it for publishing money — but he didn’t write them. “Hound Dog” was written by Leiber and Stoller. “Can’t Help Falling in Love” by Weiss, Peretti, and Creatore.

Even when he didn’t write the lyrics, he delivered them in a way no writer could. That’s the job: interpreter, not author.

2. Frank Sinatra, Whitney Houston, Diana Ross — The Vocalists

Examples embody Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Diana Ross, and lots of modern pop stars.

Sinatra wrote zero hits. Whitney Houston wrote almost none. Diana Ross? Same. Celine Dion is known for having one of the biggest voices in modern music. But Dion didn’t write many, if any, of her more famous songs — “My Heart Will Go On” was written by James Horner and Will Jennings, “Because You Loved Me” by Diane Warren.

Their talent wasn’t writing. It was making you feel like they wrote it.

3. Rihanna — The Ultimate Curator

Rihanna is the modern example. She has songwriting credits on some album cuts, but her biggest hits? “Umbrella” was written by The-Dream and Tricky Stewart for Britney Spears. “We Found Love” by Calvin Harris. “Diamonds” by Sia. “Needed Me” by Dijon.

She told Vogue: “I’m not a songwriter, I’m a curator. I find the song that says what I want to say.” And she’s the best curator alive — 14 No.1s.

4. Celine Dion, Tim McGraw, George Strait — Country & Ballad Tradition

That being so, here are three country artists who typically don’t write their own music. Tim McGraw has told some phenomenal stories in songs such as “Live Like You Were Dying” and “My Best Friend.” However, neither of those songs, and a whole lot more weren’t written by him. According to Taste of Country, “In the last 10 years, Tim McGraw has only recorded two songs he’s written.”

Same for George Strait, Blake Shelton, and most of Nashville’s radio kings. Nashville has a whole street of professional songwriters whose full-time job is to write No.1s for stars who don’t write.

5. Selena Gomez, Britney Spears (early), Jennifer Lopez — The Pop System

Singers who don’t: Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez, Miranda Cosgrove — at least according to early 2000s Answers.com lists, which were half-wrong but got the system right.

Early Britney, early Selena, J.Lo, and many Disney-era pop stars came up in a system where labels paired a charismatic singer with Max Martin, Stargate, or The-Dream. The singer brings voice, face, performance. The writer brings hook.

It’s no secret that not every musical legend writes their own songs, and even those who are more lyrically inclined sometimes hand the reins over to someone else, and still, many of those who rarely penned their own work, like Linda Ronstadt, Frank Sinatra, and Cher, managed to leave a lasting impact.

6. Rema — Says It Out Loud

Nigerian Afrobeat sensation Rema has confirmed that he doesn’t write his songs. Rema disclosed that he goes to the studio and expresses himself, unlike other stars who pay songwriters.

He goes in, vibes, freestyles melodies, and his team builds around it. He doesn’t sit with a pen. For Afro-fusion, where flow and vibe matter more than verses, that method is normal.

7. Ozzy Osbourne (in Black Sabbath) — The Voice, Not The Pen

Though Ozzy writes the vocal melodies for the songs, guitarist Tony Iommi is the band’s primary music composer, and bassist Geezer Butler writes most of the lyrics.

Same for many rock frontmen. Roger Daltrey didn’t write The Who‘s lyrics — Pete Townshend did. Ozzy sang the darkness that Geezer wrote.

So Does It Matter?

Here’s the uncomfortable truth: Some of the best singers are bad writers. Some of the best writers are bad singers.

Would “I Will Always Love You” be better if Whitney Houston wrote it? No — Dolly Parton wrote it perfectly, Whitney sang it perfectly. Two geniuses doing their own job.

The music industry has two separate talents:

  • The Writer — turns life into words
  • The Interpreter — turns words into feeling

Elvis, Whitney, Frank, Celine, Rihanna, Selena — they are interpreters. And without interpreters, the best song in the world sits in a notebook.

So next time someone says “she doesn’t even write her songs,” answer: Yeah — and she sings them better than the person who did.
