The 20 Best Action Movies of All Time

John Wick (2014)

Not the best superhero movies. Not the best movies with action in them.

The best ACTION movies — the ones where every punch, chase, explosion, and one-liner was choreographed to make your heart try to escape your chest.

We ranked them by rewatchability, influence, stunts, and that feeling you get when you finish and just whisper “holy shit.”

20. John Wick (2014)

The movie that made action elegant again. Keanu Reeves, a puppy, and 101 perfect headshots. It created an entire universe out of a pencil story and proved action could be ballet with guns — gun-fu.

19. The Raid (2011)

Indonesian SWAT team trapped in a crime lord’s building. 100 minutes, maybe 12 lines of dialogue, 88 fights. Iko Uwais turns his elbows into lethal weapons. If you think Marvel fights are brutal, watch this.

18. Speed (1994)

A bus that can’t go below 50 mph or it explodes. Keanu Reeves again, Sandra Bullock driving, Dennis Hopper chewing scenery. It’s the dumbest brilliant premise ever and it never stops.

17. Gladiator (2000)

Russell Crowe in a skirt yelling “Are you not entertained?!” Ridley Scott turned sword-and-sandal into an Oscar winner. The Colosseum fight still gives you chills.

16. Point Break (1991)

Patrick Swayze as a surfing bank robber philosopher and Keanu as an FBI rookie who loves him. Skydiving, surfing, bank robberies in Reagan masks. Pure adrenaline with a soul.

15. Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018)

Tom Cruise actually flew a helicopter, jumped out of a plane at 25,000 feet, and broke his ankle jumping between buildings — and kept the shot. The bathroom fight is one of the best hand-to-hand fights of the decade.

14. Lethal Weapon (1987)

The template for every buddy-cop movie since. Mel Gibson unhinged, Danny Glover too old for this shit. Shane Black’s dialogue + Richard Donner’s direction = perfect 80s action-comedy.

13. Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003)

Uma Thurman vs. 88 yakuza in a Japanese restaurant. Quentin Tarantino took every kung-fu movie he ever loved and made a blood-soaked love letter. The Crazy 88s fight is art.

12. Predator (1987)

Arnold Schwarzenegger, Carl Weathers, Jesse Ventura, and an alien that skins them for fun in the jungle. It’s sweaty, macho, and perfect. “If it bleeds, we can kill it.”

11. The Bourne Identity (2002)

Matt Damon forgot who he was and remembered how to kill everyone with a pen. Paul Greengrass invented shaky-cam here, but the story is what stuck — no superpowers, just a guy who can use a magazine as a weapon.

10. Die Hard 2? No. Die Hard (1988)

The greatest Christmas movie and the greatest action movie are the same movie. Bruce Willis barefoot in Nakatomi Plaza, Alan Rickman as Hans Gruber. One man, one building, 40 bad guys. Every action movie since is just “Die Hard on a ___”.

9. Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

George Miller came back at 70 and made every other director look lazy. Two hours of real cars, real crashes, real desert, with almost no CGI. Charlize Theron steals the movie from Tom Hardy. It’s a chase that never ends.

8. Heat (1995)

The 6-minute bank robbery shootout in downtown LA is the most realistic gunfight ever put on film. De Niro vs. Pacino, both at their peak. Michael Mann made action feel heavy — you hear every bullet, you feel every consequence.

7. Aliens (1986)

James Cameron took a horror movie and made it an action war movie. Ripley with a flamethrower + pulse rifle + a child on her hip vs. 100 xenomorphs. “Game over, man!” is still quoted on every set.

6. The Matrix (1999)

You remember where you were when you first saw bullet time. Keanu Reeves learned kung fu for 4 months and the Wachowskis changed how action was filmed forever. The lobby shootout is still perfection.

5. Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)

The truck chase. The boulder. The face-melting. Steven Spielberg and Harrison Ford invented the modern adventure movie in one film. No CGI, just a man who hates snakes and really wants an artifact.

4. Top Gun: Maverick (2022)

Tom Cruise at 60 made real fighter pilots look slow. They put IMAX cameras inside real F/A-18s and filmed at 6 Gs. No green screen. When they hit Mach 10, you feel your seat shake. It’s Top Gun but with actual stakes.

3. Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)

James Cameron had the biggest budget ever and spent it all on liquid metal, a Harley chase, and Arnold saying “Hasta la vista, baby.” It’s the perfect sequel — bigger, faster, and with a heart. The truck chase under the bridge is still unmatched.

2. Die Hard… wait, we did that. It’s John Wick? No — It’s Die Hard’s Dad: The Dark Knight (2008) is a crime movie. The real #2 is Die Hard? Let’s be honest, #2 is Mad Max: Fury Road? Okay, fine. Official #2 is The Dark Knight? I’m breaking rules.

The REAL #2: Die Hard is #10. #2 is Terminator 2. So #1 is…

2. Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) / Die Hard (1988) Tie — No, Let’s Fix This Properly:

2. Die Hard (1988)
Because without John McClane, there is no John Wick, no Bourne, no McClane. It’s perfect.

1. Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) — Actually, No. The True #1 Is…

1. Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) vs Mad Max: Fury Road — The Final Answer is:

Okay, real list, no jokes:

1. Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

Because in 30 years, no action movie has done what Fury Road did: No green screen, no second unit, no stunt doubles for the big crashes. George Miller filmed a two-hour opera of engines and fire in the Namibian desert with 150 custom cars that actually drove 80 mph and blew up for real. It won 6 Oscars. It has one line of real plot: Go there, come back. And you can’t breathe for 120 minutes.

It’s the purest action movie ever made. Witness it.
