Just when Gotham’s signal was starting to flicker, Warner Bros. has plunged the city back into darkness. The Batman Part II has been delayed once more, pushing Robert Pattinson’s return as the Caped Crusader further into the future. Initially slated for October 2, 2026, the sequel was first pushed to October 2027, and now audiences will have to wait until February 18, 2028.
That means fans will endure nearly six years between Pattinson’s first brooding outing in 2022 and his second. At this point, Batman isn’t just the hero Gotham deserves — he’s the one it’s going to wait an awfully long time for.
The Reason: A Script That Refuses to Be Rushed
So, what’s causing this seemingly endless delay? The answer is refreshingly simple and frustratingly inevitable: the script isn’t ready.
DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn took to Threads to set the record straight, offering a level of transparency rarely seen from a major studio:
“The only reason for the delay is there isn’t a full script. Matt is committed to making the best film he possibly can, and no one can accurately guess exactly how long a script will take to write. Once there is a finished script, there is around two years for pre-production, shooting and post-production on big films.”
Director Matt Reeves, who co-wrote the screenplay with Mattson Tomlin, has been meticulous in his approach. This isn’t a case of studio meddling or production chaos. It’s a filmmaker refusing to compromise his vision — even if it means testing the patience of millions of fans.
A First Look to Calm the Nerves
To soften the blow of the long wait, Reeves offered fans a small consolation: the first camera test footage of Pattinson back in the iconic Batsuit. While it’s not a trailer or a plot reveal, it’s a reminder that the Dark Knight is still very much alive and waiting in the wings.

While plot details remain tightly under wraps, the expanded cast is enough to generate serious excitement. Pattinson will be joined by:

The delay also highlights a growing frustration with the new DC Universe. While The Batman Part II exists as an Elseworlds story — separate from the main DCU timeline — it’s still the only live-action Batman fans will be getting for the foreseeable future.
As one analysis noted: “The transparency around it has made a now-six-year wait between films feel like an eternity” . And because DC Studios has no plans to release another Batman film in the main timeline before then, everything feels stagnant.
For a character as beloved as Batman, that’s a long time to keep fans waiting.
Gunn’s Defense: “A Five-Year Gap is Fairly Common”
James Gunn has been quick to defend the lengthy gap, pointing to other major franchises that took years between sequels:
“To be fair, a 5-year gap or more is fairly common in sequels. 7 years between ‘Alien’ and ‘Aliens.’ 14 years between ‘Incredibles.’ 7 years between the first two ‘Terminators.’ 13 years between ‘Avatars.’ 36 years between ‘Top Guns.’ And, of course, six years between ‘Guardians Vol 2’ and ‘Vol 3.'”
It’s a fair point. But it doesn’t make the waiting any easier.

The Batman Part II is now scheduled for February 18, 2028 — assuming no further delays. That gives Reeves and his team nearly two more years to perfect the script, shoot the film, and complete post-production.
For fans, it’s a test of patience. For Reeves, it’s a commitment to quality. And for Pattinson? He’s reportedly signed on for a trilogy, though he’s jokingly teased that he might be ready for retirement by the time it’s all over.
Until then, the Bat-Signal remains dark. But when it finally lights up again, it promises to be worth the wait.
