It’s here. After a year of cliffhangers, leaked set photos from London, and Keri Russell saying in every interview “Kate is not okay,” The Diplomat Season 4 arrives on Netflix on October 15, dropping simultaneously worldwide at 12:00 a.m. Pacific.
Just like the previous season, the fourth season contains eight total episodes that will be released all at once. While fans might have been hoping for more episodes, the political thriller has always been capped at eight-episode seasons.
Season 4 finds Kate Wyler and Hal Wyler’s marriage at its breaking point as political tensions boil over — and if you finished Season 3 at 2 a.m. last October, your brain is still screaming with questions.
Here are the 7 biggest ones the internet needs answered today:
1. Is Hal Actually Dead This Time?
Let’s be honest: The Diplomat loves putting Rufus Sewell in a smoking building. Season 2 ended with a car bomb. Season 3 ended with that London flat explosion and Kate screaming his name in a hallway.
Nothing could have come at a worse time for her since Kate and Hal had just worked things out between themselves, as the third season had seen them taking opposing sides in the battle for their love.
Netflix’s first look shows Bradley Whitford as Todd Penn, Keri Russell as Kate Wyler, and Rufus Sewell as Hal Wyler in episode 401 — so he made it out. But how? And does Kate ever forgive herself for putting him there?
2. Will Kate Take the VP Job?
The biggest question heading into the new season is whether Kate can maintain control of an international crisis while her personal life threatens to unravel.
Remember: Season 3 ended with President Grace Penn (Allison Janney) offering Kate the Vice Presidency. Not asking — offering. Kate Wyler, who never wanted to be Ambassador, being told she has to become VP.
Meanwhile, the relationship between Grace and Hal raises questions about loyalty, ambition and just how far powerful people will go to achieve their objectives. Hal has been coaching Grace. Grace wants Kate contained. Kate knows it.
Will she say yes to be close to power, or say no to keep her soul?
3. What Happened to the Vanished Poseidon Missile?
Teaser copy for Season 4 has been deliberately weird: “Everything seemed calm… but the storm is only beginning — The Diplomat Season 4 is shaping up as a high-stakes reckoning. The vanished Poseidon missile, secretive glances, and whispered betrayals hint at personal and political chaos that could ignite an international incident.”
Poseidon isn’t in Kate’s previous files. A missing UK nuclear-capable missile that was supposed to be on a joint exercise and isn’t? That puts Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge directly in the blast radius — and puts Kate in the middle of a US-UK cover-up.
4. Can Kate and Hal’s Marriage Survive One More Betrayal?
Netflix itself describes it: The Diplomat Season 4 finds Kate Wyler and Hal Wyler’s marriage at its breaking point.
Season 3 they were separated. Then they were working it out. Then he almost died again because she wouldn’t leave a meeting. At this point fans are split 50/50: divorce him and be free, or stay because no one understands the job like Hal does.
Showrunner Debora Cahn has said she writes them as two people who are terrible for each other and perfect for the job because of it.
5. Is Trowbridge Going Down?
The season also follows developments involving Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge and the political negotiations surrounding an… Rory Kinnear’s PM has survived a bombing scandal, a coup from within his own party, and Kate Wyler telling him he’s an idiot to his face.
Season 4 looks like his reckoning. If a Poseidon missile went missing under his watch, Grace Penn has every reason to let him fall — and every reason to use Kate to push him.
6. Who Is Stuart Really Working For Now?
Stuart Hayford (Ato Essandoh) has been Kate’s Deputy Chief, her confidant, her babysitter. But in Season 3 he started taking meetings without her. In the Season 4 trailer, he tells Kate: “You can’t keep pretending you don’t want this.”
Is he still Team Kate, or has he become Todd Penn’s guy?
7. Will There Be a Season 5?
There is, however, reason to keep an eye on the show’s future. Season 5 is still unconfirmed. Netflix hasn’t announced a renewal or a cancellation.
But Cahn wrote Season 4 to end with an actual choice, not just an explosion. If Kate takes the VP oath, we get a West Wing-level reset for Season 5. If she walks away, we get the first honest version of Kate Wyler we’ve ever seen.
Either way — all eight episodes are now available to stream. The high-stakes political drama is exclusively on Netflix.
