7 Celebrities accused of crimes they never committed

Keanu Reeves:

In the age of viral headlines and trial by social media, a single accusation can dismantle a career in hours. But for these seven celebrities, the story didn’t end with a conviction—it ended with exoneration. From a Hollywood “nice guy” to a K-pop superstar, here are seven famous figures who were accused of crimes they never committed.

The collateral damage of a false allegation is often permanent. Even when the truth emerges, the “stench of the fallout may linger” long after a name is cleared. These cases are reminders that behind every headline is a human being—and sometimes, the most damaging stories are the ones that turn out to be fiction.

1. Keanu Reeves: The Paparazzo’s $700,000 Lie

It’s difficult to imagine Hollywood’s resident “nice guy” harming anyone, but in 2007, a paparazzo named Alison Silva tried to drag Keanu Reeves through the mud. Silva sued the Matrix star for a staggering $700,000, claiming Reeves struck him with his car outside a medical clinic and fractured his wrist so severely that he could no longer hold his camera.

The story fell apart in court. Medical records revealed the break was actually an old soccer injury, and video surfaced of the “injured” photographer scaling a fence to snap photos of Britney Spears. The jury took less than two hours to toss the case, and Silva eventually admitted he had exaggerated the entire incident for a payday.

2. Venus Williams: Blamed for a Tragic Accident

In June 2017, a fatal collision in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, placed tennis superstar Venus Williams at the center of a wrongful death investigation. After a car driven by Esther Barson slammed into Williams’ vehicle, Barson’s 78-year-old husband, Jerome, suffered injuries that ultimately cost him his life weeks later.

Early reports and witness accounts pinned the blame on Williams, alleging she had run a red light. But surveillance footage told a different story. The video proved she had entered the intersection on a green light and was forced to slow to a crawl to avoid a Nissan Altima that had cut her off. Once the evidence cleared her of liability, Williams handled the situation with characteristic grace, focusing on sending condolences to the grieving family rather than assigning blame.

3. Sir Cliff Richard: A Televised Raid and a Two-Year Ordeal

In 2014, British police raided Sir Cliff Richard’s home in connection with historical sexual abuse allegations from the 1980s—and the BBC televised the raid, turning a private investigation into a public spectacle. Richard was never arrested or charged, and in June 2016, prosecutors announced he would face no charges due to insufficient evidence.

The investigation dragged on for 22 months, during which Richard said he suffered “distress, humiliation, anxiety and illness”. He later won a civil breach-of-privacy case against the BBC and has since campaigned for legal anonymity for those accused of sexual offences until they are formally charged. “I am obviously thrilled that the vile accusations and the resulting investigation have finally been brought to a close,” he said at the time.

4. Kevin Spacey: Acquitted on All Counts

Kevin Spacey’s career was effectively destroyed by a wave of sexual misconduct allegations that began in 2017. In 2022, a New York court dismissed a $40 million civil lawsuit against him. The following year, he stood trial in London, charged with sexually assaulting four men. He was acquitted of all nine charges.

Despite the acquittals, the damage was done. Spacey has spoken about the slow process of rebuilding his career, describing a Hollywood that had already moved on before the verdicts came in. His case became a defining example of the tension between the #MeToo movement’s necessary reckoning and the irreversible harm that can be done before guilt is proven.

5. Timothy Busfield: Charges Thrown Out Over Prosecutorial Misconduct

In February 2026, The West Wing and Field of Dreams actor Timothy Busfield was indicted on four counts of criminal sexual contact with a child. The allegations were devastating. But on October 16, 2026, a New Mexico judge dismissed the entire indictment, citing prosecutorial misconduct and errors that undermined the grand jury process.

State District Judge Joseph Montano granted the defense’s motion to toss the charges after finding flaws in how the prosecution had presented the case. Busfield had denied all allegations throughout the ordeal. His wife, actress Melissa Gilbert, posted a cryptic but pointed message after the dismissal: “So shines a good deed in a weary world”.

6. Gong Yoo: A False Accuser Sentenced to Prison

South Korean actor Gong Yoo, beloved globally for his roles in Squid Game and Goblin, was exonerated in 2025 after a woman falsely accused him of harassment. The Daejeon District Court found the accusations “completely unfounded” and sentenced the woman to six months in prison, suspended for two years, for defamation.

Authorities confirmed that Gong Yoo had no personal connection to the woman and that her claims were “entirely fabricated”. The case became a rare instance of a false accuser facing legal consequences—a outcome that victims of false allegations often hope for but rarely see.

7. Rubin “Hurricane” Carter: Nineteen Years for a Crime He Didn’t Commit

No list of wrongful accusations is complete without Rubin “Hurricane” Carter. In 1966, the top middleweight boxing contender was arrested and convicted of a triple homicide at a bar in Paterson, New Jersey. He was sentenced to three life terms.

The case became a lightning rod for the civil rights movement. Muhammad Ali and Burt Reynolds championed his cause, and Bob Dylan wrote the anthem “Hurricane” declaring his innocence. Carter spent nineteen years behind bars before a federal judge ruled in 1985 that the original trial had been tainted by racial prejudice. After regaining his freedom, he dedicated the rest of his life to fighting for the wrongly convicted.

These seven stories

share a common thread: the accusation arrived first, and the exoneration arrived later. In the gap between the two, careers were damaged, health suffered, and lives were upended. The internet does not easily forget a headline, even when the story behind it was a lie.

The legal system, for all its flaws, eventually worked in each of these cases. But the court of public opinion operates on a different timeline—and for the falsely accused, the verdict is often handed down long before the trial begins.
