Amazon Just Launched Android Tablets to Challenge Apple and Samsung

Amazon Just Launched Android Tablets

7 Things You Need to Know

Amazon just killed the Fire tablet. After 15 years, the budget-friendly brand that defined cheap Android slates is gone, replaced by something entirely different: the Alexa Tablet lineup. Starting at $229.99 and running up to $549.99, these are Amazon’s first tablets with full Google Play Store access, a premium aluminum build, and Alexa+ AI baked into the core. Here are the seven things you need to know.

1. The Fire Brand Is Dead. Long Live Alexa.

Amazon has officially discontinued the Fire tablet line. The company confirmed it will no longer manufacture Fire tablets and will support existing models for four years after the final shipment. The new lineup — the Alexa Tablet 8, Alexa Tablet 11, and Alexa Tablet 12 Pro — represents a complete strategic pivot.

The message is clear: Amazon is no longer content to compete on price alone. It wants to compete on experience, and it’s willing to charge more for the hardware to do it.

2. Google Play Is Finally Here

This is the single biggest change, and for anyone who owned a Fire tablet, it’s the one that matters most.

Previous Fire tablets ran Fire OS, Amazon’s stripped-down version of Android that relied on the Amazon Appstore. Popular apps were often missing, outdated, or unavailable. Installing Google Play required sideloading and workarounds that most users never bothered with.

The Alexa Tablets run full Android with native Google Play Store access out of the box. YouTube, Netflix, Gmail, Google Docs — everything you’d expect from a standard Android tablet is now available without compromise.

Amazon VP Kevin Keith called it “just the start”.

3. Three Models, Three Price Points

The Tablet 12 Pro is the flagship, featuring a 6.5mm thin aluminum unibody, quad Dolby Atmos speakers, Wi-Fi 6E, and an optional Nanomatte anti-glare display developed with Corning. The Nanomatte version costs $549.99.

Note: The Tablet 8 and Tablet 11 include lockscreen ads at their base prices. Removing them costs an extra $20.

4. Alexa+ Is the Real Differentiator

Every Alexa Tablet ships with Alexa+, Amazon’s generative-AI-powered assistant, integrated at the system level.

A persistent “Ask Alexa” widget lives in the corner of the home screen, and you can trigger the assistant with your voice or by tapping it. The most notable feature is On-Screen Intelligence — an opt-in capability that lets Alexa read what’s displayed on your screen and act on it. You can ask it to add a sports schedule from a webpage to your calendar, for example. Amazon says the feature is off by default, and a visual indicator shows whenever Alexa can see your screen.

Alexa+ also includes contextual memory and improved automation, making it a more capable assistant than the Alexa most people know.

5. Productivity Accessories Turn the 12 Pro Into a Work Machine

The Alexa Tablet 12 Pro isn’t just for streaming. Amazon is positioning it as a lightweight productivity device with two optional accessories:

  • Alexa Tablet Pro Pen ($89.99): A USI 2.0 active stylus with 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity, tilt detection, magnetic docking, and wireless charging.

  • Alexa Tablet Pro Keyboard ($149.99): A magnetic keyboard that attaches instantly without Bluetooth pairing.

Buying the 12 Pro with both accessories brings the total to $739.97 before taxes — still well below a comparable iPad Pro setup.

The 12 Pro also supports a Kindle reading mode that silences notifications, reduces blue light, and extends battery life to up to 20 hours. Stylus annotations sync with the Kindle Scribe, bridging Amazon’s e-reader ecosystem with its tablet line.

6. It Undercuts the iPad and Galaxy Tab — But There Are Trade-Offs

The Alexa Tablet 12 Pro’s $499.99 starting price puts it directly against the **iPad Air** ($599) and Samsung Galaxy Tab S11 ($549+). It undercuts both.

But the comparison isn’t entirely favorable. The iPad Pro uses a tandem OLED display with 1,000 nits of brightness — double what the 12 Pro offers. The Galaxy Tab S11 includes an S Pen in the box and has a brighter AMOLED screen with a 120Hz refresh rate. And Samsung offers better software support and after-sales service than Amazon has historically provided.

The Nanomatte display is Amazon’s answer to Apple’s nano-texture iPad Pro screen — a feature Apple reserves for its most expensive 1TB and 2TB configurations. Amazon offers it for just $50 more than the standard 12 Pro. That’s a genuine value proposition.

7. Availability and the Bigger Picture

The Alexa Tablets are available for pre-order now and ship on October 14, 2026 in the US, Canada, and Mexico. The UK, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain follow on October 19.

Amazon is also launching Kids Tablets in both 8.7-inch and 11-inch sizes at the same prices, bundled with a shockproof case, a year of Amazon Kids+, and Google Play access that parents approve app by app.

The strategic shift is unmistakable. Amazon is no longer the budget tablet company. It’s building premium hardware, charging premium prices, and betting that Alexa+ and Google Play access will convince buyers to spend more.

The Fire tablet era is over. The Alexa tablet era has begun.

The Alexa Tablet 8, 11, and 12 Pro are available for pre-order on Amazon. Shipping begins October 14.
