The rom-com is not dead. It just needed a wedding vow ghostwriter, a college crush, and Chloë Grace Moretz.
Love Language is coming to select theaters and digital/VOD this Friday, October 23, 2026 — and it’s the SXSW breakout everyone is calling “the most human rom-com in years.”
What Is It About?
Love Language follows aspiring author Louisa “Lou” Klaussner, who, after a failed engagement, reconnects with her college best friend and longtime crush, Warren. This reunion puts her in the middle of an unexpected love triangle.
But the official synopsis that Vertical released gets juicier:
“Following a failed engagement, Lou discovers she has a talent for writing other people’s wedding vows.”
Then: “Aspiring author Louisa falls into a side hustle writing wedding vows for other people.”
And then the twist: She is shocked to learn that Warren is the fiancé of Olivia, one of Lou’s wedding vow clients… putting Lou in the middle of a messy love rectangle.
In the trailer: Lou is writing beautiful vows for Olivia (Isabel May), a perfect bride-to-be. Olivia’s fiancé is Warren (Anthony Ramos) — Lou’s college best friend who she was secretly in love with for 4 years. Warren says to her: “I was in love with you in college.”
Meanwhile, there’s also Leo (Manny Jacinto) — the sweet guy who actually likes Lou now.
So Lou has to write wedding vows for her crush to marry another woman, while falling for someone else. Writer’s block doesn’t even begin to cover it.
As Lou says in the trailer: “Does she know how obsessed you were with him?”

Why SXSW Loved It
Those types of movies have fallen to the wayside as of late, and SXSW 2026’s Love Language hopes to change that.
Early reviews say it Feels Authentic And Human. Directed and written by Joey Power, picks up with its lead, Louisa ‘Lou’ Klaussner (Chloë Grace Moretz), as she tries to move on in life after being dumped by her fiancé.
Critics praised:
- Chloë’s performance — no superpowers, no horror, just a 28-year-old trying to pay rent by writing love letters for strangers. Her most adult role yet.
- Manny Jacinto as a rom-com lead — charm to a messy wedding vow love rectangle. Finally gets to be the romantic lead, not the joke.
- The vows themselves — each wedding vow Lou writes is actually a love language — acts of service, words of affirmation — which is where the title pays off.
And what we love are moments. Moments are what make up a life. That’s the tagline.
