Why Fans Can’t Stop Talking About It
They played Sophie and Sky. They dated for three years. They broke up in 2011. And this weekend, at the Hamptons International Film Festival, they hugged like no time had passed at all. Here’s why their reunion has everyone saying “Here we go again.”
On October 3, 2026, Amanda Seyfried and Dominic Cooper walked the same red carpet for the first time in years — not for Mamma Mia!, but for their own separate projects. Seyfried was premiering The Life and Deaths of Wilson Shedd, while Cooper was there for The Lightkeeper. They posed for a photo together, shared a friendly hug, and the internet promptly lost its collective mind.
The reunion comes 18 years after Mamma Mia! first hit theaters, and 15 years after the couple’s real-life romance ended. It also comes just weeks after Seyfried confirmed her separation from husband Thomas Sadoski after nine years of marriage.
But if you’re hoping for a romantic rekindling, Seyfried has a message for you: this is friendship, and it’s beautiful.
“Nothing But Good Feelings”
Speaking to People at the festival, Seyfried described the reunion with warmth and clarity.
“Our lives are very different. We live in very different places and I just have nothing but good feelings about him,” she said. “When you’re with somebody for a long time when you’re younger, it just kind of evolves into this familial, nice, soft kind of bond. It’s nice to see him. Also, I’m just grateful for him”.
She added: “He’s hilarious. It’s funny, relationships, friendships, they always evolve. It’s just so crazy that as we get older, you just want to be kind if you can. Especially if you had a friendship like that, I think it’s amazing, and I feel really lucky”.
Seyfried also confirmed that they had reconnected “for the first time in a long time” at the festival.
A Mamma Mia! Story That Refuses to End
Seyfried and Cooper met on the set of Mamma Mia! in 2008, where they played Sophie and Sky — the young couple whose wedding brings the whole chaotic, ABBA-scored story together. They started dating after filming wrapped, and their relationship lasted three years before ending in 2011.
A decade later, they reunited on screen for Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, proving that exes can work together without drama. Cooper told Attitude magazine at the time: “She’s a friend. It was always going to be OK. You just have to be delicate with those situations”.
Both have since moved on to new relationships. Seyfried married Thomas Sadoski in 2017 (they confirmed their separation in September 2026), while Cooper has been with actress Gemma Chan since 2018.
The Mamma Mia! 3 Question
Cooper, ever the charmer, used the reunion to tease fans about a possible third film.
“I came up with a great storyline for it,” he joked to People. “I said it on the red carpet recently, but I’ve realized that I’ve got the whole storyline wrong from the other one, so it didn’t really work”. He added: “They better hurry up, because we’re all getting old”.
He also reflected on the film’s extraordinary legacy: “Children watched it every day, five times a day! So the parents of the children feel very connected with it… it filled people with joy”. He said fans have told him the movie brought them comfort during the final days of their loved ones’ lives. “That, for me, is just extraordinary to be part of that”.
Seyfried herself said in September that a third film is “inevitable,” noting that producer Judy Craymer “wants to do it” and “would do anything to get us together”.
Why Fans Can’t Stop Talking About It
The reaction online has been a mix of nostalgia, hope, and a little bit of chaos.
Some fans are convinced the reunion is a sign of something more — especially given Seyfried’s recent separation. Others are simply delighted to see two people who once loved each other remain genuine friends.
The truth is somewhere in between, and Seyfried herself put it best: “When you’re with somebody for a long time when you’re younger, it just kind of evolves into this familial, nice, soft kind of bond”.
It’s a rare thing in Hollywood. Two people who met as fictional lovers, became real ones, broke up, worked together again, and stayed kind. There’s no drama. No bitterness. Just a hug on a red carpet and a shared history that neither of them seems to regret.
Amanda Seyfried
and Dominic Cooper will always be Sophie and Sky to a generation of Mamma Mia! fans. But they’re also something better: proof that a relationship can end without turning sour, and that people can grow apart and still be genuinely happy to see each other.
The reunion wasn’t a romantic comeback. It was something quieter and, in its own way, more meaningful. It was two old friends, 18 years down the road, still glad they found each other in the first place.
And if Mamma Mia! 3 ever happens? Cooper’s already got a storyline. He just needs to fix it first.
