The Hunger Games Returns: Why Sunrise on the Reaping Has Fans Revisiting Panem

The Hunger Games Returns

Panem is back. And this time, it’s worse.

The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is scheduled to arrive in North American theatres on November 20, 2026, with an IMAX release planned. The film adapts Suzanne Collins’s 2025 novel and returns audiences to Panem before Katniss Everdeen’s fight against the Capitol.

24 years before Katniss volunteered. 24 years before “May the odds be ever in your favor” became a threat. The morning of the reaping for the 50th Hunger Games — the Second Quarter Quell.

The one that broke Haymitch Abernathy.

And fans are obsessing over it again, like it’s 2012.

What Is Sunrise on the Reaping About?

The story takes place 24 years before the events of The Hunger Games, beginning on the morning of the reaping of the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell.

This time, the focus is on Haymitch Abernathy, the District 12 victor who later becomes Katniss and Peeta Mellark’s reluctant mentor.

Official synopsis: ‘ The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’ will revisit the world of Panem, 24 years before the events of ‘ The Hunger Games’, starting on the morning of the reaping of the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the deadly Quarter Quell that doubles the number of tributes from each district.

Translation: 48 tributes in the arena, not 24. Two from each district are reaped, then Capitol doubles it to four to remind districts that for every dead Capitol child in the war, two district children die. Twice as brutal.

The teaser of the latest installment which revisits the world of Panem has Joseph Zada playing young Haymitch Abernathy on the morning of the reaping of the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell.

Set in the world of Panem 24 years before the events of The Hunger Games, the story follows Haymitch into the arena, where he forms an unlikely alliance with fellow tribute Maysilee Donner (Mckenna Grace) and joins a coalition determined to challenge the Capitol’s control under President Snow (Ralph Fiennes).

The book, which was released in March 2025, revisits “the world of Panem twenty-four years before the events of The Hunger Games, starting on the morning of the reaping of the Fiftieth Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell,” according to Scholastic.

At the centre of it all is a young Haymitch Abernathy, still living in District 12 and trying to hold onto the people and future he cares about. The story follows 16-year-old Haymitch Abernathy, played by Joseph Zada.

Directed by Francis Lawrence (who directed every Hunger Games since Catching Fire), highly anticipated prequel is set to hit theaters on November 20, 2026.

Cast stacked:

  • Joseph Zada as young Haymitch (16, clever, funny, not yet alcoholic)
  • Mckenna Grace as Maysilee Donner — Haymitch’s ally, original owner of the mockingjay pin, District 12 girl who was friends with Mrs. Everdeen
  • Ralph Fiennes as President Snow — younger Snow, mid-50s, at height of cruelty, played after Tom Blyth‘s young Snow in Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes
  • Glenn Close, Elle Fanning in undisclosed Capitol roles — first glimpse in teaser shows them shining
  • Jesse Plemons? Rumored as Haymitch’s mentor (Beetee?)

The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping opens only in theaters on November 20, 2026.

Why Are Fans Revisiting Panem Now?

It’s been 11 years since Mockingjay Part 2. Why does a prequel about Haymitch make TikTok have 1.2B views for #sunriseonthereaping?

1. Haymitch was always the most tragic character — now we see why.

In original trilogy, Haymitch is funny, drunk, sarcastic. Then you learn: He won by using force field to kill last tribute. Capitol killed his mother, brother, girlfriend two weeks after he won as punishment for making them look stupid.

Sunrise on the Reaping is that story. The book shows exactly how he won, how his alliance with Maysilee Donner formed, how the Capitol tortured him after.

The upcoming Sunrise on the Reaping travels to another important period in that history, focusing on the Games that shaped Haymitch Abernathy.

Fans who loved Katniss realize: Katniss had hope. Haymitch had none. His Games were crueler — 48 kids, no sponsors who cared, arena that was a poisonous butterfly paradise.

2. The Second Quarter Quell is the cruelest Games ever designed.

First Quarter Quell (25th): Districts voted who to send — democracy as cruelty.

Second Quarter Quell (50th): Double the tributes. Tells districts: Your children are so disposable we can kill twice as many.

Third Quarter Quell (75th, Katniss’s second): Victors reaped — past winners.

Fans know Second Quell is where Snow learned to punish creativity. Haymitch wins by being smart — using arena edge. Snow hates smart.

3. It’s the missing link between Snow and Katniss.

Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (2023) showed Snow at 18 — ambitious, poor, falling in love.

Sunrise on the Reaping shows Snow at 50 — President, paranoid, fully evil, played by Ralph Fiennes. You see how he goes from boy who loves Lucy Gray to man who orders 48 children killed because one boy made him look foolish.

And Maysilee Donner — mother of original mockingjay pin. That pin Katniss wore? It was Maysilee’s. When you reread Hunger Games after Sunrise, that pin means something else.

4. 2026 is perfect timing for Panem again.

All Five Hunger Games Movies Stream Free on Fandango Ahead of Sunrise on the Reaping — promotion ahead of Nov 20. Gen Z who were 8 when Mockingjay came out are now 19, in college, reading Collins for first time. They see Panem not as fantasy but as political reality TV, surveillance, Capitol vs Districts inequality — feels familiar.

Plus: Collins released novel March 2025, it became #1 NYT bestseller in 3 days. BookTok made Haymitch edits with sad songs. Now film teaser dropped July 2026 — Glenn Close, Ralph Fiennes and Elle Fanning shine in first glimpse.

Should You Reread Before November 20?

Yes. Order:

  1. The Hunger Games
  2. Catching Fire (mentions Haymitch’s Games briefly)
  3. Sunrise on the Reaping (novel, 2025) — read now
  4. Then watch trailer again — you’ll catch Maysilee’s pin

The official synopsis confirms that the story begins on the morning of the reaping itself, grounding the film in tension from the very first moment.

No waiting in line at midnight like 2012? There will be. The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping – in theaters & IMAX November 20, 2026.

The odds were never in Haymitch’s favor. That’s why we need to see how he survived.
