10 Overlooked Places in Your Home That Need a Deep Clean Right Now

Lego piece

You cleaned the counters. You vacuumed the floors. You even did the bathroom.

But your house still feels… dusty? Funky? A little sticky?

That’s because you’re cleaning the places you see. The gross stuff lives where you never look.

Here are 10 spots pros say are the dirtiest in every home — and you probably haven’t touched them in months.

1. Under Your Kitchen Appliances — Especially The Fridge

Pull out your fridge. Go ahead. I’ll wait.

That black, fuzzy, slightly sticky carpet of dust, crumbs, and that one Lego piece from 2022? That’s 2 years of dead skin, pet hair, and food that fell behind the fridge and is now slowly composting.

Same with your oven and dishwasher. Deep clean: Pull it out (carefully), vacuum with the crevice tool, then mop with hot water + dish soap + a splash of white vinegar. Clean the coils while you’re there — your electric bill will drop 5%.

2. Your Dishwasher Filter

You think your dishwasher cleans itself? No. It has a filter at the bottom that traps food. If your glasses smell like wet dog, that’s why.

Pop out the bottom rack, twist out the filter (usually bottom center), and rinse it. You’ll find rice, lettuce, and a horror film. Soak it in hot soapy water for 10 minutes, scrub with an old toothbrush. Do it monthly.

3. Washing Machine Gasket & Detergent Drawer

That pinkish slime in the rubber seal of your front-loader? That’s mold. The black stuff in your detergent drawer? Also mold.

Run an empty hot wash with 2 cups white vinegar + 1/2 cup baking soda. Then leave the door OPEN after every wash — this is the #1 rule everyone ignores. Pull the drawer out completely and scrub it in the sink.

4. Light Switches, Doorknobs, and Cabinet Handles

When was the last time you wiped a light switch? Exactly.

A 2023 NSF study found light switches have more bacteria than a toilet seat. We touch them with raw chicken hands, kid snot hands, everything hands.

Wipe: Spray disinfectant on a microfiber cloth (not directly on the switch — you’ll fry it), wipe all switches, knobs, handles, fridge handle, microwave buttons. Takes 5 minutes, makes the house feel brand new.

5. Baseboards and Door Frames

You don’t notice them until you do — and then you can’t un-see them. Baseboards collect dust, pet hair, and scuffs like a magnet.

Quick fix: Vacuum with brush attachment, then wipe with dryer sheet — it repels dust for weeks. For door frames, look at the TOP edge. That line of dust? It’s been there since you moved in. Wipe it.

6. Inside Your Reusable Water Bottle Lids and Straws

You wash the bottle. But the LID? The silicone seal? The straw?

That rubber gasket unscrews. Inside is biofilm — a slimy colony of bacteria that survives your rinse. Soak lids, straws, and seals in hot water + baking soda overnight, then use a straw brush. If you have a Stanley or Owala, you KNOW.

7. Under the Bathroom Sink + Behind the Toilet Base

Open under your bathroom sink. See that weird sticky bottle leak? Hair product? Hair?

And behind the toilet — not the bowl, the base where it meets the floor. That yellow crust is urine splash that has calcified. Spray with hydrogen peroxide + dish soap, let sit 10 min, scrub. Wear gloves you will want to burn after.

8. Your Mattress — Not the Sheets, the Mattress

We wash sheets. We never clean the actual mattress. It has 10 million dust mites, sweat, dead skin.

Deep clean right now:

  1. Strip bed completely
  2. Vacuum entire mattress with upholstery tool
  3. Sprinkle baking soda over entire surface, leave 1 hour
  4. Vacuum again
  5. Spray lightly with 50/50 water + white vinegar, let air dry

Do this every 6 months. Your allergies will thank you.

9. Remote Controls, Game Controllers, and Keyboards

Your TV remote has more bacteria than your toilet seat. And when was the last time you cleaned between your keyboard keys?

Flip keyboard upside down and shake (you’ll be disgusted). Then: Remove batteries from remotes, wipe with isopropyl alcohol wipe, use toothpick + alcohol wipe to get gunk from around buttons. For keyboards, use compressed air + alcohol wipe.

10. The Top of Everything Tall

Top of the fridge. Top of kitchen cabinets. Top of the wardrobe. Ceiling fan blades.

If you haven’t cleaned it, there’s a 1/4-inch blanket of greasy dust up there — kitchen grease floats up and mixes with dust to create a sticky film.

Climb up with a damp microfiber (dry will just spread it), wipe, then dry. For ceiling fans, use an old pillowcase: slide it over the blade, press, pull — dust stays inside the case, not on your bed.

The 30-Minute Challenge:

Don’t try to do all 10 today. Pick 3. Set a timer. Put on a podcast.

Start with:

  • Light switches + doorknobs (5 min)
  • Dishwasher filter (5 min)
  • Baseboards in one room (10 min)

You’ll be shocked how much cleaner your home feels even though you didn’t “clean.”

Which one are you avoiding the most? For me it’s always behind the fridge.
