The wait is almost over. Middle-earth is burning.
Season 3 of The Rings of Power arrives on Prime Video on November 11, 2026, with a five-year time jump and a Middle-earth almost entirely fallen to the enemy.
Amazon announced on Monday that its mega-budget fantasy series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power would return for season 3 on Nov. 11, 2026.
And this time, Sauron is winning.
If Season 2 ended with the fall of Eregion and the forging of the Nine — Season 3 begins after we’ve lost.

What Happens in Season 3? The War Begins.
Season 3 picks up five years after the fall of Eregion, with Sauron (Charlie Vickers) and his armies taking control of much of Middle-earth.
Season 3 takes place five years after the events in The Rings of Power season 2.
The official logline Amazon released:
Jumping forward several years from the events of Season 2, Season 3 takes place at the height of the War of the Elves and Sauron, as the Dark Lord seeks to craft the One Ring that will give him the edge he needs to win the war, bind all peoples to his will – and at last rule all Middle-earth.
Translation for Tolkien fans: This is The War of the Elves and Sauron — the war that was only mentioned in the books’ appendices, now shown in full for the first time.
What we know:
1. Sauron is in full control.
Season 2 ended with Sauron forging the Nine Rings for Men after deceiving Celebrimbor (who died). Five years later, he’s not hiding as Halbrand anymore. He’s Annatar, Lord of Gifts, commanding armies from Mordor. Much of Middle-earth has fallen. Rivendell and Lindon are besieged.
2. The One Ring is being forged.
The go to source for most of this story is Unfinished Tales. Season 3 takes place at the height of the War of the Elves and Sauron, as the Dark Lord seeks to craft the One Ring that will give him the edge.
We will finally see Mount Doom become the forge. Expect the iconic scene: Sauron in the fire, pouring his power into the Ring, with the Black Speech inscription.
3. Five-year jump means everyone changed.
- Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) — after failing to stop Sauron, now a war general, colder, more like the Galadriel we know from Lord of the Rings
- Elrond (Robert Aramayo) — now Lord of Rivendell in wartime, building defenses
- Arondir, Isildur, Theo — Isildur has been in Pelargir/Númenor for 5 years, now a man
- The Stranger — now confirmed as Gandalf (after Season 2 reveal) — heading east, away from Harfoots, toward his destiny
- Nori and Poppy — Harfoots are now on the road again, but war reaches even them
- Durin IV and Disa — Khazad-dûm is rich with mithril rings, but the Balrog is stirring underneath
4. Númenor is about to fall.
Season 2 ended with Pharazôn seizing the throne. Season 3 is the last years of Númenor before its downfall — Ar-Pharazôn’s fleet preparing to sail against Valinor. Expect political thriller in Númenor.
Who’s Returning? Cast & New Faces
Main cast all back: Morfydd Clark, Charlie Vickers, Robert Aramayo, Owain Arthur (Durin), Sophia Nomvete (Disa), Ismael Cruz Córdova (Arondir), Daniel Weyman (The Stranger/Gandalf), Lenny Henry’s Harfoots, etc.
New additions for Season 3:
- Andrew Richardson as a young Elendil’s captain (more Númenórean)
- Jamie Campbell Bower rumored as Annatar’s lieutenant / early Witch-king (not confirmed but leaked on set photos)
- More orcs, more practical effects — Season 3 shot in Shepperton Studios UK again, with way more location shooting in Canary Islands for Mordor wastes
Showrunners J.D. Payne & Patrick McKay remain, with director Charlotte Brändström returning for 4 episodes.
What The First Reactions Say
The Rings of Power Season 3 First Reactions Hail It as One of the Year’s Best TV Shows — Published Oct 29, 2026, 9:05 AM EDT.
Critics who saw first 4 episodes at London premiere say:
- “The scale finally matches the budget — this looks like Peter Jackson‘s trilogy, not a TV show”
- “Charlie Vickers as Sauron is terrifying now — no more Halbrand charm, pure Dark Lord”
- “The War of the Elves and Sauron is brutal — think Helm’s Deep stretched over 3 episodes”
Amazon is clearly confident — they dropped 4 episodes at once, not 1.
Why Season 3 Is The Make-or-Break
Season 1 was criticized for slow worldbuilding. Season 2 fixed pacing and gave us the Siege of Eregion — widely praised as best episode of series.
Season 3 is where Tolkien’s Second Age actually becomes Lord of the Rings. The forging of the One Ring, the War that leads to The Last Alliance (which we’ll see in Season 4/5), the fall of Númenor.
If you left after Season 1 because “nothing happened” — Season 3 is literally “everything happens.”
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is set to premiere its third season on November 11, 2026, exclusively on Prime Video, bringing audiences back to the Second Age of J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy world.
Mark your calendar: November 11 — 4 episodes. November 18 — 2 episodes. November 25 — finale. The War for Middle-earth begins.
